If you’re looking for a proper martial-arts action movie, Blades of the Guardians is one of the first films I’d recommend from this list.

Directed by legendary action filmmaker Yuen Woo-ping, the movie follows Dao Ma, a bounty hunter who accepts a job protecting a mysterious man on the road to Chang’an. The job quickly becomes much more dangerous when Dao Ma discovers that the man he’s protecting is the empire’s most wanted bounty.

That simple setup gives the movie plenty of room for sword fights, hand-to-hand combat and large-scale action sequences.

The cast is another major attraction. Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse and Jet Li bring together several generations of Chinese action cinema, making the movie feel like a genuine martial-arts event rather than just another generic action film.

IMDb currently gives Blades of the Guardians a 6.8/10 rating.

Disclosure Day brings Spielberg back to the alien and science-fiction territory, with Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth leading the cast.

The story revolves around the discovery that humanity may not be alone, and what happens when that information becomes impossible to keep hidden.

The movie also benefits enormously from Spielberg’s experience with suspense. Even when the film isn’t delivering a giant action sequence, there is usually a sense that something important is about to happen.

It takes some confidence to bring Masters of the Universe back to the big screen.

The new movie puts Nicholas Galitzine in the role of Prince Adam/He-Man, with Jared Leto playing Skeletor and Idris Elba as Duncan/Man-At-Arms.

The story follows Prince Adam as he discovers that the strange memories surrounding his life are connected to the legendary Sword of Power. He is then forced to return to Eternia and face the tyrant who destroyed his family and kingdom.

If the title War Machine sounds like a straightforward military action movie, that’s because it is — but with a major science-fiction twist.

The story follows the final recruits of an intense special-operations training program. Their training takes a terrifying turn when they encounter a mysterious and extremely dangerous force that isn’t from Earth.

Alan Ritchson leads the cast, with Stephan James, Blake Richardson, Dennis Quaid, Esai Morales and Jai Courtney also appearing.

IMDb currently rates the movie 6.3/10.

In Shelter, he plays Mason, a former government assassin who has withdrawn from the world and lives alone on a remote Scottish island.

His isolated life changes when he rescues a stranded girl named Jessie. The decision puts him back on the radar of people connected to his violent past.

IMDb currently gives Shelter a 6.1/10 rating.

The final movie on our list is Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender, an animated fantasy-action film based on the beloved Avatar: The Last Airbender universe.

The story follows Aang as he discovers an ancient power that could help save his culture from extinction. Together with his friends, he sets out on a global adventure before that power falls into the wrong hands.

IMDb currently gives the movie a strong 7.7/10 rating.

After going through these 11 movies, I think Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the easiest overall recommendation.

It has the biggest audience response, enormous box-office numbers and the kind of large-scale action that really benefits from a big screen.

But that doesn’t mean it’s the only movie worth watching.

If you’re a martial-arts fan, Blades of the Guardians is probably the movie to start with.

If you prefer crime stories, Crime 101 gives you a more grounded experience.

For science-fiction fans, Disclosure Day and War Machine offer two very different approaches.

And if you want fantasy action, Masters of the Universe and Avatar Aang: The Last Airbender are the obvious choices.

Then there are smaller movies like The Furious, Normal, Fuze and Shelter, which offer something different from the biggest studio productions.

I had a pretty good time watching these movies, and there are quite a few here that I’d happily recommend to other action fans.

If you want martial arts, start with Blades of the Guardians. For a crime story, Crime 101 is a good choice, while Spider-Man: Brand New Day is the obvious pick if you want something big and entertaining. I’d also give Fuze and Normal a chance if you’ve already seen most of the bigger releases.
