I watch a lot of movies, but every now and then, I come across a group of films that reminds me why I enjoy action movies so much.
That happened to me again in 2026.
I watched a lot of the big releases this year, and what stood out to me was how different these action movies were from one another. Some went all-in on huge set pieces and visual spectacle. Others focused more on crime, suspense, characters, or a surprisingly strong story.
A few gave me exactly the kind of big-screen experience I was hoping for.
What surprised me most, though, was how many people seemed to know very little about some of these movies.
That’s what inspired me to put together this list of the Best Action Movies of 2026.
I’m not saying that every movie here will become everyone’s favorite. We all have different tastes. Instead, these are 15 action movies that stood out to me because of their stories, directors, performances, action sequences, or overall entertainment value.
Some were major theatrical successes. Others found their audience through streaming rather than the box office.

The Odyssey
Christopher Nolan takes on Homer’s legendary epic with Matt Damon playing Odysseus. The story follows his dangerous journey home after the Trojan War, taking him through encounters with monsters, mythical creatures, enemies, and enormous obstacles.
This is easily one of the biggest cinematic experiences of the year.
The audience response has been exceptionally strong, with IMDb showing an 8.4/10 rating from hundreds of thousands of users. The film has also crossed $1.6 billion worldwide against an estimated $250 million budget.
Christopher Nolan also serves as writer and producer alongside Emma Thomas.
What I like most about The Odyssey is that the action never feels completely disconnected from the story. Every major challenge is part of Odysseus’ journey home.
The End of Oak Street
David Robert Mitchell’s mysterious thriller follows an ordinary family whose life begins to unravel after a terrifying event. The movie mixes suspense, action, mystery, and family drama instead of relying purely on explosions and spectacle.
This is one of the more unusual choices on my list because it isn’t a conventional action blockbuster.

The movie had an estimated $85 million budget and has passed $100 million worldwide.
Disclosure Day
Steven Spielberg returns to large-scale science fiction with a mysterious story surrounding humanity’s discovery that we may not be alone. Emily Blunt, Josh O’Connor and Colin Firth lead a cast caught in an extraordinary global situation.
The IMDb audience rating currently sits around 6.4/10, while the film has earned roughly $241 million worldwide against a reported $115 million budget.
Steven Spielberg directed the film, while David Koepp and Spielberg are credited as writers. Spielberg and Kristie Macosko Krieger produced it.
For me, Spielberg’s direction is the biggest reason this movie belongs on an action list. Even when the film slows down, it maintains a strong sense of scale.
Mortal Kombat II
Mortal Kombat II brings back the brutal fighting, fantasy battles, supernatural powers, and video-game characters that made the first movie popular. Johnny Cage joins the returning fighters as the heroes face an even larger threat.
The film has earned approximately $129 million worldwide on an estimated $80 million budget.
Simon McQuoid returns as director, while Karl Urban joins the cast as Johnny Cage.
The producers include Todd Garner, E. Bennett Walsh, Toby Emmerich, Simon McQuoid and James Wan.
Ready or Not 2: Here I Come
Grace returns for another deadly game, but this time the danger expands into a much larger conflict involving rival families and an estranged sister. The sequel combines action, horror, dark comedy and survival thriller elements.
The movie had a relatively small estimated $17 million budget and earned more than $43 million worldwide.
Matt Bettinelli-Olpin and Tyler Gillett directed the sequel, with Samara Weaving and Kathryn Newton leading the cast.
I like this one because it doesn’t try to become a generic action sequel. It keeps the twisted humor and survival-game atmosphere that made the first film memorable.
Crime 101
Chris Hemsworth plays a highly skilled jewel thief whose carefully planned crimes bring him into conflict with an obsessive detective. Halle Berry and Mark Ruffalo join him in this crime thriller based on Don Winslow’s novella.
The film was directed by Bart Layton, who also co-wrote the screenplay with Don Winslow.
IMDb lists an estimated $90 million budget and roughly $72.9 million worldwide box office.
The cast is one of the biggest reasons I wanted to include it. Chris Hemsworth, Mark Ruffalo and Halle Berry give the movie a strong commercial cast without turning the story into a simple superhero-style action film.
Star Wars: The Mandalorian and Grogu
Din Djarin and Grogu make the jump from television to the big screen for a new Star Wars adventure. The movie expands their relationship while delivering the space battles, creatures, blaster fights and large-scale Star Wars spectacle fans expect.
The movie earned around $345 million worldwide on an estimated $165 million budget.
Jon Favreau directs, while Pedro Pascal returns as the Mandalorian.
For me, the biggest appeal is seeing this particular Star Wars story translated into a proper theatrical adventure.
The Wrecking Crew
Two estranged half-brothers are forced to work together after their private-investigator father is murdered. One is a suspended cop and the other is a Navy SEAL, giving the movie plenty of room for fights, comedy, family conflict and chaotic action.
The movie was directed by Ángel Manuel Soto and stars Dave Bautista and Jason Momoa as the two brothers.
It wasn’t a conventional theatrical box-office success because it was released through Prime Video, but it became a major streaming action hit.
The Rip
A group of Miami police officers discovers millions of dollars in cash, but the discovery quickly creates suspicion within the team. Matt Damon and Ben Affleck lead this gritty crime thriller directed by Joe Carnahan.
IMDb currently lists the movie at 6.8/10 from more than 145,000 ratings.

War Machine
A group of elite military recruits discovers that their training mission has turned into something far more dangerous when they encounter a mysterious extraterrestrial threat.
Patrick Hughes directs the movie and stars Alan Ritchson in the lead role.
IMDb currently lists the film at 6.3/10.
Because this is a Netflix release, there is no theatrical box-office total to report. That doesn’t mean the film lacks commercial impact, though. It became one of Netflix’s major action performers in 2026.
I particularly like the combination of military action and science fiction here. It gives the movie a different identity from the more traditional crime and superhero films on this list.
Masters of the Universe
Prince Adam discovers that the memories shaping his life are connected to a much larger truth. He returns to Eternia and takes up the Sword of Power while confronting Skeletor and a threat to his kingdom.
Travis Knight directs the film, with Nicholas Galitzine playing Adam/He-Man and Jared Leto as Skeletor.
The movie had an estimated $170 million budget and earned approximately $114 million worldwide.
The commercial performance wasn’t as strong as the biggest films on this list, but I included it because the movie delivers the kind of large-scale fantasy action that fans of the property were waiting for.
Supergirl
Milly Alcock takes on the role of Supergirl in a DC adventure that follows Kara Zor-El on a journey far beyond the usual superhero formula. The movie mixes space fantasy, superhero action and a more personal story.
Craig Gillespie directed the movie, while Milly Alcock stars as Supergirl and David Corenswet appears as Superman.
The estimated budget was $170 million, with worldwide box office around $126 million.
The audience response has been more mixed than some of the other movies here, with IMDb currently showing a 5.8/10 rating.
Beast
A former MMA fighter is pulled back into the world of combat when his brother gets into serious trouble. Russell Crowe plays his former coach, helping him prepare for one final fight against a brutal champion.
Tyler Atkins directs the film, while Russell Crowe also receives a screenplay credit.
The movie currently has a 5.8/10 IMDb rating and has earned approximately $1.76 million worldwide.
This is probably the most niche selection on my list. It doesn’t have the commercial scale of Spider-Man or The Odyssey, but fans of MMA movies and fight-focused action may still find something to enjoy.
Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert
Blades of the Guardians: Wind Rises in the Desert follows Dao Ma, a bounty hunter who accepts a dangerous job escorting a mysterious man toward the ancient city of Chang’an. He soon discovers that his client is the empire’s most wanted man, turning what should have been a simple journey into a deadly chase involving rival factions, government forces, merchants and skilled martial artists.
What immediately caught my attention with this movie was the combination of its cast and director. Yuen Woo-ping is one of the most respected names in martial-arts cinema, and bringing together stars such as Wu Jing, Nicholas Tse and Jet Li gives the movie plenty of action credibility.
The audience response has also been encouraging. The film currently holds a 6.8/10 IMDb rating, while Rotten Tomatoes shows a 96% audience score and a 94% Tomatometer score.
It also performed strongly internationally. Current box-office data puts its worldwide gross at roughly $215 million, with more than $193 million coming from China alone.
For me, this is one of the better choices on the list if you want action that is built around actual martial-arts choreography rather than relying heavily on CGI. The desert setting, sword fights and large-scale battles give it a distinctive visual style, while the bounty-hunter story keeps the movie moving.
If you’re a fan of classic martial-arts movies or enjoy watching Wu Jing and Jet Li in a large-scale action adventure, this is definitely one to add to your watchlist.
Which of These Best Action Movies Should You Watch First?
After going through these movies, I don’t think everyone will enjoy the same titles.
That’s completely normal.
If you asked me where I would start, though, I would divide them by what kind of action movie I was in the mood for.

Why These Movies Stand Out
What I like about this year’s action lineup is the variety.
Not every movie depends on the same formula.
Spider-Man: Brand New Day and The Odyssey are enormous theatrical experiences. Crime 101 is much more interested in characters and crime. Mortal Kombat II focuses heavily on fantasy combat, while Ready or Not 2 mixes action with horror and dark comedy.
Then there are movies such as The Rip, The Wrecking Crew and War Machine, which show how important streaming has become to the action genre.
That is something I think is worth remembering when talking about the Best Action Movies of 2026.
Box-office numbers are useful, but they don’t tell the entire story.
A movie can become a streaming hit without earning a dollar in theaters. A theatrical movie can make hundreds of millions and still divide audiences. And sometimes a smaller movie simply gives you a better two hours than a $200 million blockbuster.
That’s why I don’t think the biggest movie should automatically be called the best.
For me, the combination of a good director, memorable characters, a strong story and action that actually means something is what makes a movie worth watching.

After going through all of these movies, my personal starting point would be fairly simple.
The best thing about action movies is that there isn’t one correct way to enjoy them.
Sometimes I want a giant blockbuster. Sometimes I want a clever crime story. And sometimes I just want to sit down, turn off my phone and watch two hours of people running, fighting and trying to survive.
That’s why I think 2026 has given action fans plenty to explore.
