10+ Must Watch Biography Movies You Must Watch at Least Once
There is something different about watching a movie when you know the person at the center of the story actually existed. The struggles, failures, achievements, relationships, and difficult choices suddenly feel much more personal. That is probably why I have always had a soft spot for biography movies.
Over the years, I have watched quite a few biographical films, and some stayed with me long after the credits rolled. A few entertained me, some taught me something new, and others genuinely changed the way I looked at a particular person or period in history.
So, if you are searching for 10+ must watch biography movies you must watch, I have put together a list of films that I believe are worth your time. I have included both Hollywood and Indian biographical movies, covering scientists, athletes, musicians, leaders, and ordinary people who went through extraordinary circumstances.
These are not ranked purely by IMDb rating. I have considered the story, performances, emotional impact, historical importance, and, most importantly, how memorable the movie feels after watching it.
Why Biography Movies Feel Different
What Makes a Biography Movie Worth Watching?
Before getting into the list, I think it is worth explaining what I look for in a good biographical movie.
A great biopic should do more than simply tell us what happened in someone’s life. It should make us understand the person behind the achievements. Their fears, mistakes, ambitions, relationships, and moments of failure are often just as interesting as their success.
What I Consider Before Recommending a Biopic
Of course, biographical movies sometimes dramatize events or compress timelines to make the story work on screen. So I don’t treat every scene as a history lesson. Instead, I look at how effectively the film captures the spirit of the person’s journey.
With that in mind, here are the biography movies I would recommend.

My Personal Picks: Where Should You Start?
If you haven’t watched many biographical movies before, I wouldn’t necessarily recommend watching these in the order above.
I’d start with 12th Fail if you want motivation.
Choose The Pursuit of Happyness if you want an emotional and inspirational story.
Go for Dangal or Bhaag Milkha Bhaag if sports biographies are your thing.
If history and science interest you, start with Oppenheimer or The Imitation Game.
And if music is your thing, Bohemian Rhapsody is the obvious choice.
For something more classic and historically significant, Gandhi is still worth making time for.
Choose Your Biography Movie Based on Your Mood
Why I Keep Coming Back to Biography Movies
After watching so many movies based on real people, I have started to appreciate something I didn’t notice when I was younger: success rarely looks impressive while it is happening.
We usually see the finished version of someone’s life the awards, records, discoveries, fame, or achievements. Biography movies let us see the messy part before all of that.
That is what I enjoy most about this genre.
Biography Movies Show Us What Happens Before the Finish Line
Someone fails. Someone gets rejected. Someone loses everything. Someone makes a terrible decision. Then, somehow, they keep moving.
Of course, movies dramatize real events, and they shouldn’t replace proper historical research. But a good biopic can make you curious enough to learn more about the real person afterward.
That happened to me several times while watching these films.
My Take on These Biographical Movies
There are plenty of biography movies out there, but the best ones don’t feel like history lessons. They make you care about the person.
From Oppenheimer’s complicated relationship with his own creation to Chris Gardner’s fight for a better life, from Alan Turing’s extraordinary mind to Milkha Singh’s determination, each film on this list offers something different.
More Than Just a Story About a Real Person
